When Is Easter 2023?

Easter eggs will be hidden on April 9, which is a week earlier than the one the previous year had on April 17.

Good Friday takes place on Friday, April 7, serving as a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. Easter Monday will occur on Monday, April 10, which will mark a four-day weekend for the rest of the UK but not Scotland, which generally does not recognize it as a nationwide bank holiday; however, some councils like Edinburgh, Dundee, and Falkirk do.

How Was The Date For Easter Decided?

The first significant church council in 325 AD decided when Easter should fall each year. Shortly after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus during Passover, some Christians celebrated the event by designating it as Nisan month, which is March or April per year.

However, other Christians of this period chose to have the event on a Sunday because this was the date that Jesus' tomb supposedly was found by the religious studies lecturer at the University of Texas, Brent Landau.

To solve the dispute over the date of Easter, the Council of Nicaea determined that Easter should occur on the first full moon after the March equinox.

Why Does Easter's Date Change Every Year?

Easter always falls on the first full moon after the Vernal equinox, and as the first full moon dates vary by year, so does Easter's date.

The date of Easter varies a lot as it depends on the moon. The date is set to coincide with the first Sunday after the Passover Full Moon, the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Although the exact date of the vernal equinox may vary each year according to the Cu Farmer's Almanac, the church has consistently recognized the vernal equinox as March 21.
