Justin Bieber Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, Paralyzed On Half Of His Face

Singer Justin Bieber announced Friday that he will be taking a break from performing because of Justin Bieber Ramsay Hunt syndrome. In a video posted on his verified Instagram account, the singer explains that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which leaves him unable to move half of his face and unable to go on stage.

What Is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

You may not have heard of this syndrome, but you probably know about chickenpox, which is caused by the same virus.
The Mayo Clinic explains the condition is caused by the herpes virus, “during an outbreak of shingles that affects the facial nerve near one of your ears.” The syndrome can not only cause a shingles rash, but also facial paralysis and hearing loss. Justin Bieber Ramsay Hunt syndrome is similar to the more famous Bell’s palsy, although the effects of Ramsay Hunt are more severe.

According to research by the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, Ramsay Hunt’s recovery was much more difficult than his recovery from Bell’s palsy (facial paralysis without a rash). Patients may also not fully recover, the researchers said.
Other symptoms of Ramsay Hunt include ringing in the ears, nausea, dizziness, and involuntary eye movements.

The pop star said “It was this virus that attacked my ear nerve and facial nerve and left my face paralyzed,” he said in the video,”As you can see, this eye doesn’t blink. I can’t smile on this side; this nostril won’t move. So this side of me is completely paralyzed.”

He told fans he was disappointed by the recent cancellations of his concerts and said he was “obviously physically incapable of doing them.”

“This is pretty serious, you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but, clearly my body told me I had to slow down,” he said. “I hope you guys understand. I’m going to use this time to rest, relax and get back to 100% so I can do what I was born to do.”

He thanked his fans for their concern and said that he is doing facial exercises to recover quickly. He said he doesn’t know how long it will take to recover, but earlier this week it was announced that three of his upcoming performances have been postponed.
