Grateful Dead is an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. Wrapping up his North American tour of ‘Rough And Rowdy Ways’ this past weekend, Bob Dylan treated the audience to a cover of The Grateful Dead.
The Grateful Dead Is A Surprise Gift From Bob Dylan’s Tour
Bob Dylan promoted his latest album from November 2021, taking a break from December 2021 to March 2022.
The show ended last night at Oakland, California’s Fox Theater – the third of his three nights at the venue. For the last song of his tour, Dylan made a last-minute change of plans to trade ‘Every Grain Of Sand’ for a cover of The Grateful Dead’s ‘Friend Of The Devil’.
Dylan And The Grateful Dead Is Love And Collaboration
This was the first time since 2007 that Dylan performed Dead live, although it was his main track and also helped many fans know him in the late 90s.
Dylan’s love of the Grateful Dead dates back several decades. They even toured together in 1987 with Dead acting as his backing band. When Jerry Garcia died in 1995, Dylan made a rare public appearance at his funeral. “There’s no way to measure his importance or greatness as a person or as an artist,” Dylan told Rolling Stone at the time.
Bob Dylan And “Friend of the Devil” Of Grateful Dead
Dylan first performed “Friend of the Devil” on August 27, 1990 in Merrillville, Indiana. It was unlikely to be performed again for the next two decades. Prior to this new show in Oakland, he last performed on July 19, 2007 at the Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado.
Audiences know why he brought “Friend of the Devil” back after all these years and Bob Dylan never said it. But it’s perhaps no coincidence that the tour takes place near the Dead’s hometown of San Francisco.
